Coronavirus patient advice

If you think you may have symptoms of the coronavirus please do not come to the surgery, instead ring 111 for advice. Please see the website below for further details.

Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or a hospital. You do not need to contact 111 to tell them you're staying at home.

Use the NHS 111 online coronavirus service if:

• you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home

• your condition gets worse

• your symptoms do not get better after 7 days

Only call 111 if you cannot get help online.

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Unless you have been advised to come to surgery by a GP, you should not enter our premises. PLEASE PHONE US INSTEAD. All prescriptions will be sent electronically to a nominated chemist. PLEASE RING US IF YOU NEED TO ORDER YOUR MEDICATION, DO NOT COME TO THE SURGERY OR POST YOUR REQUEST.

Surgery closures

Due to current circumstances and staff shortages Gold Street Surgery is closed to patients. We are also having to close the reception desk at The Worsbrough Centre between 12pm and 2pm each day. If you need to speak to us urgently please ring 731298 or 648150. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by this.



Online access

You can order your regular repeat medication and access your medication and allergies using our online service. If you are interested in this service please ask the receptionist for a registration form for internet access.

DNA Policy

Please note that if you do not attend (DNA) for 3 booked appointments within a 12 month period you will be sent a letter advising you of this. If you DNA again afterwards you may be removed from the Practice list. Please also note that if you arrive more than 5 minutes late for your appointment you will be asked to re-book. Thank you.

Named GP for all patients

All our patients have now been allocated a named GP, this does not affect which GP you see or who visits you at home in any way. You can obtain the name of your named GP by contacting the Practice. Thank you.

From the beginning of October we will be providing flu vaccinations to eligible patients, if you are unsure whether you qualify, please refer to the notices in the waiting areas or ask one of our reception team. Thank you.

Sharing your information to improve your care

We are signing up to a new system which will allow health and social care professionals from outside the GP practice directly involved in your care to view the most up to date information about you. This allows professionals caring for you to more understand your needs and means you only have to tell your history once. For more information please ask for a leaflet at reception or see attached link. You will be asked for your consent whenever a professional outside the GP practice wishes to view your record. If you do not wish your information to be shared in this way please let us know.

Privacy Notice

iHEART Barnsley 365

iHEART Barnsley 365 is an NHS service available to anyone registered with a GP in Barnsley. The service is open for appointment booking between 6.30pm-10.30pm Monday to Friday and 10am-1pm Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. Appointments can be booked via telephone between 4pm-6pm Monday to Friday and 8am-9.30am Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays.

Please note that dental problems will not be dealt with by Dove Valley Practice. If you are experiencing problems of this nature please contact your own dentist, if you are not registered with a dentist please telephone 111 for assistance. Thank you.

Have you come with something contagious today?

There could be people in the waiting room who are pregnant, on chemotherapy or other medications that lower their immune system.

If you think you may have something like chickenpox or are unwell with something that could be spread to vulnerable patients in the waiting room (excluding coughs and colds) then please speak to our receptionists who can seat you somewhere away from the main waiting area.

Patient information - home visits

Home visits are not contractual, they are carried out if the GP feels they are appropriate and the patient is housebound and there may be cases where the patient is asked to attend surgery. Please ensure that if you request a home visit, you let the receptionist have your current contact details in case the GP needs to contact you. Please try and let us know that you need a home visit by 9.30am, thank you

Our Reception staff have been asked to obtain information about your problems if you request a home visit or emergency appointment, this helps the GP to triage/assess the problem before seeing you. Please be assured that all staff are bound by confidentiality regulations and your information is only accessed on a 'need to know' basis.

Accessible Information Standard

We support the NHS Accessible Information Standard, and endeavour to identify, share and meet any of our patients' special communication requirements.

The accessible information standard aims to ensure that patients (or their carers) who have a disability or sensory loss, receive information they can access and understand, for example in large print, braille or via email, and professional communication support if they need it, for example from a British Sign Language interpreter.

Individuals most likely to be affected by the Standard include people who are blind or deaf, who have some hearing and/or visual loss, and people with a learning disability. However, this list is not exhaustive.

If you feel that this applies to you or someone in your care, please collect a form from surgery, we will then do our best to meet these needs.

Charity donations

Dove Valley Practice helps charities where ever we can. In the past we have donated books etc to third world countries and more recently we have donated 2 boxes of unused blood monitor machines to The InDependant Diabetes Trust, (IDDT a charity for people living with diabetes).

Travel advice/vaccinations


Dove Valley Practice must be given at least 6 weeks’ notice if you need an appointment for holiday vaccinations/advice. If you are travelling within 6 weeks you will be advised to attend a private travel clinic. 


Test Results

If 'phoning for test results, please note that they may only be requested from reception AFTER 2.00pm when 'phone lines are less busy, ensuring that lines are kept free for requests for emergency appointments and home visits at busier times. Thank you

Electronic Prescription Service

We are upgrading to the next phase of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) which will mean that almost all our prescriptions will be processed electronically from 17th August 2020

Electronic prescriptions help save the NHS money.

You will receive your prescriptions in the same way as you do now.

Comments and suggestions

Instead of the traditional physical suggestion box which we used to have in our surgeries, we now have an online suggestion box.  If you use the link below you can make suggestions to Dove Valley Practice.  The suggestions are anonymous, but if you need a response you will need to provide your details on the suggestion.

CQC inspection December 2019

Don't wait for a doctor's appointment - go straight to your pharmacy.

Barnsley GPs and pharmacies are offering a new service which gives you more choice and easier access when it comes to treating minor illnesses and ailments. This service is called Pharmacyfirst and means that you can get advice and/or medicines for common, less serious illnesses from your local pharmacy, without having to make an appointment with your GP.

If you don't normally pay NHS prescription charges, then any medicines supplied under the Pharmacyfirst scheme will be FREE. If you do pay for your prescriptions, then the cost of the medicines should be much less than the prescription charge and you get the same great advice from your pharmacist. Your pharmacist is a qualified health care professional who can help with your health problems. The pharmacist will offer you a private space to talk about your symptoms.

The following condiitons are currently covered by the scheme: allergies; athlete's foot; blocked nose; cold sores; conjunctivitis; constipation; cough; dermatitis; diarrhoea; earache; eczema; ear wax; haemorrhoids; hay fever; headache; head lice; heartburn; indigestion; infant colic; mouth ulcers; nappy rash; oral thrush; pain; scabies; sore throat; teething; threadworms; vaginal thrush; verrucae; warts.

Cancer screening

We would encourage our patients who receive invitations for cancer screening programmes to attend. This screening can pick up and diagnose cancers early and they can be fully treated.

Reception opening hours

The opening hours displayed on our website relate to the times when a receptionist is available, and not to the actual surgery hours. We do offer appointments from 7.30am on some mornings and till 7.30pm on some evenings. On these occasions, there is no reception cover, but patients can use the automated check in for arrival.

Risk Profiling: How your NHS records are used.

This practice is taking part in a new NHS service that helps your family doctor to identify whether you need more help to manage your health. The service is called "risk profiling".

Using information from your health records, a secure NHS computer system will look at any recent treatments you have had in hospital or at this surgery, and any existing health conditions that you have, and alert your doctor to the likelihood of a possible future admission. The clinical team at the surgery will use the information to help you get early care and treatment where it is needed.

The information will be seen only by qualified health workers involved in your care. NHS security systems will protect your health information and patient confidentiality at all times.

If you do not want your information being used in this way, please contact any member of our Reception Team.


We would like to advise patients of the Dove Valley Practice, that we are now participating in clinical research.

This will not impact on patients directly but may mean that you are contacted regarding certain medical conditions.

Please be assured that no personal or medical information will be released without your consent.

GP income

All GP practices are required to declare the mean earnings (e.g. average pay) for GPs working to deliver NHS services to patients at each practice.  The average pay for GPs working in Dove Valley Practice in the last financial year was £87,805 before tax and national insurance.  This is for 5 full time GPs and 3 part time GPs who worked in the practice for more than six months.

Please note that the prescribed method for calculating earnings is potentially misleading as it takes no account of other expenses that the GPs must pay in addition to tax and national insurance such as indemnity cover (which could be as much as £7000 per year) and how much time the GPs spend working in the Practice.
